What is Open Graph?

A protocol developed by Facebook that controls how URLs appear when shared on social media.

The Open Graph protocol (OGP), developed by Facebook in 2010, defines a set of meta tags that control how URLs appear when shared on social platforms including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Slack.

Without OG tags, platforms scrape available content and make their own decisions about what to show — often with poor results. OG tags give you explicit control over the title, description, image, and content type shown in link previews.

Essential Tags

  • og:title — Headline for the link preview
  • og:description — Summary text
  • og:image — Preview image (1200×630px recommended)
  • og:url — Canonical URL
  • og:type — Content type (website, article, product)

Not directly. OG tags are primarily for social sharing previews. However, better social sharing leads to more clicks and shares, which can indirectly affect organic rankings.
